Texture coating around Southfield for walls and ceilings: textures that hide imperfections, match what you already have and get painted after.
Texture Coating
Texture coating is a layer of compound or textured material applied to drywall or plaster to give it a pattern you can see and feel. It's used on walls and ceilings to hide small imperfections, to add character to a plain surface, and to match existing texture after a repair.
Once the texture is applied and dry, it gets primed and painted like any other wall, so you end up with a finished surface in the color you want.
Texture Types
Most textured walls and ceilings fall into a handful of patterns:
A fine, bumpy spatter that looks like the skin of an orange. Subtle and common on walls.
Spattered compound flattened with a knife for a mottled look, used on walls and ceilings.
Compound skimmed on with a trowel that skips across the surface for a hand-finished look.
Fine grit mixed into the coating for an even, gritty finish.
Not sure which texture you have? We can identify it when we look at the wall.
Texture Matching
When part of a textured wall or ceiling is repaired, the patch stays smooth until the texture is rebuilt. Matching it starts with identifying the pattern, then applying texture in the same style and scale, testing along the way so the size and spacing line up with the original.
After the texture dries, the area is primed and painted with the rest of the surface. Done well, you can't tell where the repair was. It's often the last step of a drywall repair on a textured wall.
Hiding Imperfections
Yes, within reason. A light texture breaks up the way light hits a wall, which makes small dents, seams and uneven spots much harder to see than they would be on a smooth, glossy surface. That's why texture is a common choice for ceilings and for older walls that have seen a few repairs.
Texture isn't a fix for damaged drywall, though. Holes, cracks and water damage should be repaired first so the texture has a sound surface to hold onto.
FAQ
Answers to common questions about texture coating with Pro Choice Painters.
Yes. Texture coating can go on smooth walls and ceilings to add character or help hide flaws, and then it's painted in your color.
Texture coating changes the surface itself, adding a pattern you can feel. A faux finish uses paint and glaze to create the look of depth on a smooth wall.
It can be. Some new builds call for textured walls or ceilings for the look or to soften drywall seams. See new construction painting for the rest of the process.
