How Is a Hole in Drywall Patched So It Doesn't Show?
The secret to an invisible patch is patience. Larger holes get a solid backing or a new piece of drywall, then joint compound goes on in thin coats, each one feathered wider than the last so the patch blends into the wall instead of leaving a bump.
After the compound dries, it's sanded smooth and checked in low, angled light, where flaws are easiest to spot. Then the patch is primed and painted. On walls with texture, the texture gets matched before painting so the repair disappears. More on that on our texture coating page.
Primer
Why Do Drywall Patches Show Through Paint?
Joint compound soaks up paint differently than the wall around it. Paint a patch directly and it can show as a dull or shiny spot, an effect painters call flashing. That's why patched areas get primed before the finish coat, like the white primed patches in the photo at the top of this page.
Sheen matters too. Even with primer, a small touch-up on an older wall can stand out, so the best result often comes from painting the wall from corner to corner. We'll tell you when a touch-up will blend and when a full wall makes more sense.
Water Damage
Can Water-Damaged Drywall Be Fixed?
Usually, yes. The first step is making sure the leak itself has been fixed, whether it came from a roof, a pipe or a bathroom upstairs. Painting over an active leak only hides the problem until the stain comes back.
Once everything is dry, drywall that's soft or sagging gets cut out and replaced. Stains on sound drywall get sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they don't bleed through the new paint. Then the area is finished and painted to match the rest of the wall or ceiling.
