What Does Exterior House Painting Cover?

Exterior painting protects and refreshes everything on the outside of a house that takes the weather: siding, trim, fascia, doors, garage doors and painted brick. Some homes need the whole exterior done. Others just need the trim, the front door or a tired garage brought back.

We paint house exteriors around Southfield and nearby cities, and we quote the parts you actually want done.

  • Siding and trim
  • Front and entry doors
  • Garage doors
  • Shutters
  • Painted brick

Michigan Weather

How Does Michigan Weather Affect Exterior Paint?

Michigan puts exterior paint through a lot. Humid summers, cold winters and repeated freezing and thawing make surfaces expand and contract, and over time that leads to cracking, peeling and fading. The sides of a house that get the most sun usually show it first.

Watch for these signs:

Catching it early is usually simpler than waiting until bare wood has been through another winter.

  • Peeling or bubbling paint
  • Chalky residue when you rub the siding
  • Faded color on the sunny sides
  • Cracked paint on trim and window sills
  • Bare wood showing through

Prep and Masking

How Is a House Prepped for Exterior Painting?

Most of an exterior paint job happens before the color goes on. Surfaces need to be clean and dry, loose paint has to come off, and gaps around trim get sealed so the new coat has something solid to hold onto.

Then everything that shouldn't get paint gets covered. On spray jobs we mask doors, windows, fixtures and trim with paper and plastic, and we lay drop cloths on driveways and walkways. That's what keeps overspray off your car, your landscaping and your neighbor's house.

Painted Brick

Can You Paint a Brick House?

Yes, brick can be painted, and it can completely change how a house looks. A popular look is white painted brick paired with dark shutters and a dark garage door.

Painting brick is a long-term decision. Once brick is painted it stays painted, and it will need fresh coats down the road like any other painted surface. The brick also has to be clean and dry first, so the coating bonds instead of peeling. If you're on the fence, we can talk it through when we look at the house.

Timing

When Is the Best Time to Paint a House in Michigan?

Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures within the range on the product label, both while it goes on and while it cures. In Michigan, that usually means late spring through early fall, on days that aren't too cold, too wet or too humid.

Weather can still move a schedule, so planning early helps. Reaching out before the season gets busy gives you more choice of dates, and it gives you time to settle on colors before the work starts.

Exterior Colors

How Do You Choose Exterior Colors for Siding and Trim?

Exterior colors are a choice you'll live with for a long time, so it helps to look at the whole house at once: siding, trim, shutters, doors, the roof and any brick or stone that isn't getting painted.

We're happy to talk colors through when we come out to look at the house.

  • Pick the main body color first, then trim and accents
  • Start from the roof and any unpainted stone or brick
  • Contrast between siding and shutters makes details stand out
  • Look at samples in daylight on more than one side of the house
